Safe Families Keeps Family Together

Lydia - Safe Families

Sometimes a few short days with Safe Families can alter the course of a life. That was certainly the case for “Aimee,” who has experienced more in her 26 years than most people do in a lifetime.

Both of Aimee’s parents were incarcerated when she was a child. She became a ward of the state at age 12 and grew up in Indiana’s foster care system. For years, Aimee has struggled with depression and loneliness.

In her early 20s, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and told she would never have children. She battled cancer with tough determination and eventually defeated the disease. Perhaps not surprisingly, she went on to have two beautiful children. Aimee faithfully attends counseling and has completed classes to learn to be a good mom.

Soon after giving birth to her second child, Aimee decided to go off her medication in order to breastfeed her baby safely. A mental health crisis followed, and Aimee was hospitalized. With no extended family members to rely on for help with her boys, she turned to Safe Families.

Two host families stepped up to support Aimee and welcomed five-month-old Brian and four-year-old Brandon into their homes.

After Aimee’s brief hospitalization, the family was reunited and the boys were returned home.

“If Safe Families hadn’t been there for me, I would have lost custody of my children,” Aimee says today. “Thanks to Safe Families, I’m doing fine now.”

Her family lives in a small but immaculate house where Aimee plays what she calls the most important role of her life — being a mother. Her Safe Families volunteers still visit and occasionally help with the children, just to give Aimee a break.

On behalf of Aimee, her children, and the many other families who depend on this ministry for help, thank you!

Your prayers, financial and volunteer support are keeping Safe Families strong, allowing us to be there for people who often have nowhere else to turn.

Together, we are making a tangible difference for families throughout the country.
